The average kitchen cabinets are filled with a jumble of pots and pans made from a variety of materials. However, some of these pots and pans may be exposing you to toxic chemicals when you cook your favorite meals. Thankfully, there are nontoxic cookware options that can help you create a healthy kitchen without sacrificing the function of your cooking gear.
When shopping for cookware non toxic, it is important to look for pieces that are free from coatings that contain PFAs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). These chemicals are known as “forever chemicals” as there is evidence they can cause a wide range of health problems and environmental issues. You should also look for stainless steel, ceramic, or cast iron cookware that is oven safe.
Ceramic Nonstick:
Although these pans are marketed as ceramic, they do not contain any natural clay that is typically associated with ceramic. Instead, these pans are coated with a synthetic nonstick coating called Sol-Gel which uses a mixture of inorganic materials. While they are safe to use, they don’t last nearly as long as PTFE and GenX coated nonstick pans, so you will need to replace them more often.
The best option for nontoxic cookware is stainless steel, glass, or enameled cast iron pots and pans. These are durable, versatile, and free from harmful chemicals. However, they can require a little more care than coated nonstick pans because they are more likely to scratch and discolor over time. They can also react with acidic foods, so if you choose to cook with them it is best to only do so for low-medium heat and avoid extremely acidic food like tomatoes.
